I often do projects based on suggestions and comments from my subscribers or items I find in charity shops. I like to keep my work as simple and basic as possible so that it can be copied easily and improved by anybody who wants to try themselves. I recycle or repurpose items rather than buy new and when I do buy I like to keep it cheap.
I have a second channel "GrandadsOtherChannel" ua-cam.com/users/GrandadsOtherChannel which is generally where I will host the videos that give extra detail or longer versions of the videos I post on my main channel.

I subbed because I can
Is that big capacitor charging up and then giving the motor a flick? It's interesting anyway. Thanks 👍 😀
You have done well designing a clip-on battery holder for it. That 3D printer is brilliant for these sorts of jobs but you need to educate yourself on how to design the parts you need and you have definitely done that. You have designed and printed tons of original parts for things. Brilliant work. 🖨👌👍👍👍
Thanks Mike, a couple more episodes to go 😁😁
A very good Saturday afternoon to you sir
Good afternoon, David 😁😁
Just use a faston, a 35A or 40A car-fuse and you can connect the wires straightforward, then hotglue them inplace and it will safely work, just not look that nice.
Yes that would work 👍👍

😊 morning 👍
@@johnwynne-qx6br morning 🌞
Just built the module and head with my boy. Tried testing it to see if solar was working and gears not moving. What am I doing wrong!?!
Have you tried using an AA battery in place of the solar panel? If you are testing indoors, you will find many modern lights don't give the right light for solar panels. You need a high wattage halogen bulb or an old-fashioned incandescent bulb. If it works with a battery, then you have built it correctly, and you just need good sunshine. If it doesn't work with a battery, then you will have to take it apart and check the motor works. If the motor works, then you had something misaligned, and putting it back together might help you sort that out.
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan thank you so much sir! tested with a battery and heard the gears turn than stop,so my son and I took apart and found gear was misaligned. Fixed and works now!
I'm starting to think batteries are a scam
Well this cheese eats the magnesium pretty quickly so it is not a practical idea 😢😢
Your garden is beautiful
Thumbs 👍
Looks great 👍
Thanks, John 👍👍
Cheese oh. You can't beat a nice Wenslydayle or Cheddar. Works great. 👌👍🧀
Very acidic, it ate the magnesium pretty quickly 😁
Interesting with the cheese. Would it work with solid cheese? Just shows the stuff that can be used to create electricity. Brilliant. 🧀🧀😃👌👍👍
looks great
Could you not use the top half of the old battery ?
Yes, you could👍👍 I guess you were not listening to what I said. The one I talk about by Gaudesign at 01:05 uses that method. The link is in the video description. I have it in mind that I might do a video changing the NiCd cells for new ones so I would want the old battery case anyway. This project took me 4 episodes to get it to the point that I was actually rather pleased with the result.
Looking good!
It took me 4 episodes to get it right. I am rather pleased with the final result 😁
Nice
Haha. Yes, 2 years go fast. So many things happen in 2 years, but then again so many things can happen in a second. 😲
What a delightful start of the day!😁❤
I could have done with seeing BigClive's video before the clip lead fest of my version haha. It's good to see a posher conversion like this one 😀
Yes, I like bigclive's version. There are loads of more complicated adapters on UA-cam videos that really achieve nothing more than Clive has done with his minimalist approach. There are 4 episodes in this series and I am rather pleased with the end result.
Could you not open up the original battery and replace the batteries? I agree with MickyNuts. A good print for the power adapter. 👌👍👍
Yes, you could buy a set of NiCd cells to replace the originals. Not cheap, but cheaper than buying a replacement NiCd battery. Of course, to connect up the cells you are best using one of those little spot welders, so that would be an additional expense, plus the Nickel tab strips. Suddenly the LIDL LiIon battery seems to be a reasonable cost and a good upgrade. Add to that the fact that I already have 2 of those LIDL battery packs that I bought several years ago and never used. Check your comment 2 years ago on the video I did on the original battery teardown ua-cam.com/video/eGRzEYbYOSw/v-deo.html
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan We need to reverse the time machine. 🤣 Oh yes, those little spot welders. Well, I have one and tried to use it several times about 3 years or more ago. It kept tripping the circuit breaker, no matter what socket I plugged it into. Have a nice holiday. 👌👍
Good job there Graham. Interesting thing those electric strimmers. Good print for the power adapter. It's interesting because I hope to have my petrol trimmers up and running soon, along with other junk. It will be my first video. 😁👍👍
I am at Glastonbury Festival
@@MrDbone75 Have a great time 👍🌞
Copper and Lead have almost the same electronegativty, so the expectation is much less voltage than with Magnesium. Zinc, Aluminium and Titanium should be better but still lower than magnesium. Although Al and Ti tend to passivate under certain electrolytes. Flipping polarity, where the Copper gets used up, you could use Carbon, Platinum or Gold as well. Using Platinum and Zinc or Carbon and Copper should give a comparable or higher voltage to Copper and Magnesium.
Have a good one 🙂

Characterless human being
Pareidolia is the tendency for perception to impose a meaningful interpretation on a nebulous stimulus, usually visual, so that one detects an object, pattern, or meaning where there is none. Pareidolia is a type of apophenia. Common examples include perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formations; seeing faces in inanimate objects; or lunar pareidolia like the Man in the Moon or the Moon rabbit. The concept of pareidolia may extend to include hidden messages in recorded music played in reverse or at higher- or lower-than-normal speeds, and hearing voices (mainly indistinct) or music in random noise, such as that produced by air conditioners or by fans.
Can i use ilford photographic paper?
I am afraid I am not a photographer and have limited knowledge of brands of paper. What I do know is that it must be light sensitive paper, not the paper you would put in an ink jet printer to produce glossy photographs. There are links to my other videos from this series in the video description and here is a link to Justin Quinell's video tagged to start at the point he talks about the paper ua-cam.com/video/wtZOWEB_wcI/v-deo.htmlsi=InSsgfMkBqOYG-l5&t=312
If you can use the cabbage to make a litmus test, that indicates its PH neutral. With red being high in the acid direction and blue being high in the base direction. See, it must be in the middle of the two to be a fair swing. Something that's not acidic or a base won't be very reactive. Or at least that's what our science teacher spent a few days drumming into our little skulls as kids . (Hi Mr F) I mean.. the H in the term PH refers to the hydrogen ..ions... and its aqueous.. aqua.. aquatic..you know damp.. in other words.. water. You know. H2O... H..20. So no H ions .. or no OH ones... no way to flow the electricity across the void between the electrodes.
Is there a way to slow down the output with gearing in body, can't seem to slow it down with gears under body
If you mean to add another layer of reduction gears inside the gearbox I doubt you could make enough space. You could try trimming the spacers but I think it would be too difficult. Obviously you would also need to find suitable gears to match what is already there.
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan thanks for the reply, might try some Lego gears or a geared down motor
Why don't u just send it back
I choose to repair it because I have the ability to fix it and I find it interesting. However if you are looking at costs, you are right, repair is not economical. As for "sending" it back, that wouldn't be economical either. These cost less than the cost of a stamp. If it had failed within a reasonable time after purchase I could have taken it back to the shop where I had bought it and asked for a refund or replacement, however driving back to the shop would again cost more in petrol that the item cost me originally.
The problem might be because it is a cabbage. A cabbage like that has layers of leaves overlapping so you won't get a good transfer of electrons. If there was liquid between the layers then it would probably create more voltage. I'm surprised the snowman is running on it. Using a knife to make a slit may release some fluid which will help. Well, that's my theory. 😁👍👍
@mikeflight9 The white cabbage I used a few weeks back worked fine, so this was a surprise 🤔 It may well be that the leaves have some sort of coating the white cabbage didn't, or there is a chemical difference to the makeup. Certainly, the reason for buying it was to make a litmus solution for demonstrating acidity.
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan I have small nickel plates about 4X4 inches. I will give you a shout via em.
I thought the lead would have worked. Then that is probably wishful thinking because lots of batteries use lead. Have you tried using nickel? I thought of nickel as we have nickel-metal hydride batteries. 👌👍👍
With enough cells in series to build up the voltage the copper/lead would probably work. As for nickel, that gives me an interesting side thought/rabbit hole 🤔 I don't know how I would identify nickel, I don't even know for certain that the copper I use is copper or the zinc I use is zinc, or for that matter if the lead was lead. The only reason I believe I have magnesium is because that is what I ordered. Without being a chemist, I don't know how I could be sure of any of the materials I have used. In fact many of the items that I have assumed to be stainless steel could well be nickel plated as that is used for the same purpose. From memory, stainless steel would be using chromium. I have just checked and stainless steel can contain chromium and/or nickel 🤔🤔 I said it was a rabbit hole.
Hmm...does the presence of an impeller matter that much? I've got a vacuum 'propeller' and also a mini leafblower one, will try both but keen to hear your thoughts Mr Grandad Oldman:)
I would suggest you research what the Coanda Effect is. I am not convinced that this car actually runs under that effect. However I am confident that it is not using a conventional propeller to "screw forwards" through the air. There is a link to a playlist in the video description where I collected together several videos on the subject.
good experiment
It was worth a try. I expect that a series of 3 or 4 of them would probably do the job 😊
Thanks 🙏 for this idea From India 🇮🇳
Good luck. You will find more information in the video description 👍👍
